SMM 2014 reports staggering results

a clear demonstration of its role, as the world’s leading trade fair for the maritime industry

We set new records this year. The excellent turnout showed that companies are ready to meet the current challenges with determination and also revealed a growing appreciation for collaboration.

Innovation was placed centre stage of this 26th SMM. The number of attendees from around the globe superceded those seen at any SMM in the past quarter of a century. After four days brimming with activity, 90,000 square metres of exhibition space housed more than 2,100 exhibitors from all around the world, including 150 first-timers. 50,000 industry visitors walked through the doors of the Hamburg Messe this September.

The industry‘s top event again took place under the patronage of the German Chancellor, Dr Angela Merkel.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the exhibitors, visitors, sponsors, media and supporters for participating in this year’s event and for their role in contributing to SMM’s success.

We look forward to welcoming you again to Hamburg for SMM 2016.

We’re delighted to make our début at this year’s SMM and are staggered at the size and diversity of this trade fair. It’s just the right venue for meeting the audience we want to address. There’s no better place to present ourselves to the industry.

shaping the global maritime industry

The extensive international presence, strong business visitor profile and continued involvement from government and naval organisations result in underscoring the influence and major role that the SMM plays in shaping the global maritime industry.

With its 26 national pavilions and exhibitors from 67 different countries, this year‘s fair was more international than ever. Two thirds of the exhibitors hailed from countries other than Germany. For the first time, companies from Egypt, Lebanon and Sri Lanka showcased their maritime products and services, and Dubai set up its first-ever national pavilion.

taking industry challenges head on

The challenges facing the maritime industry were addressed and discussed at great length at SMM this year.

The spirit was collaborative, and all attendees shared the same goal of ensuring that the way is paved for the future with innovative technology and solutions that can be implemented throughout the industry and worldwide. Hamburg further cemented itself at the epicentre of global maritime innovation.

connecting with stakeholders and shaping deals

Exhibitors responded overwhelmingly positive this year with regard to the question of whether they were able to reach and engage with their target audiences at SMM this year. The incredible diversity of exhibitors and attendees, coupled with the networking opportunities that the fair provided, ensured that 98% of all exhibitors were able to connect with business partners whom they had set out to meet.

Major contracts were signed at the fair between companies such as Carnival Corporation with Blohm+Voss and MAN Diesel&Turbo SE with Qingdao Haixi Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. (QMD). This, once again, highlighted the pivotal role that the SMM plays in providing a stage for international business deals.

The intimacy of the event and the ability to not only present one‘s business, but also to conduct business at SMM, was quoted as a quality that sets this trade fair apart from all others in the maritime industry.

SMM theme days

SMM reaches far beyond the four-day industry fair. The accompanying supporting programme set new standards this year‚ with the integrated events being particularly well received.

The majority of participants rated the conferences as ‘good’ or ‘very good’. This year‚ the Recruiting Day was added to the conference selection. It provided a stage to attract highly qualified staff for the shipping industry.

All in all, the SMM theme days provided a platform for in-depth dialogue and debate and brought fresh insights and ideas on how to position the maritime industry for the future.

setting the stage for the future

insights into the new world of ship finance

With 120 international delegates‚ the Ship Finance Forum 2014 was‚ once again‚ a key part of SMM. It provided an important platform to discuss the current developments within the maritime industry.

International experts brought their insights into the new world of ship finance to the table, and the topic of which strategies and schemes are promising and how to make the best use of them, was fi ercely and openly debated.

SMM 2014 proved once again to be the leading international trade fair for the maritime industry. It is a unique platform for participants to maintain and extend their worldwide network. Opportunities to exchange ideas and views were manifold in and around the exhibitions.

Side conferences such as the Ship Finance Forum allowed for in-depth discussions on financing aspects and trends in the maritime industry with international bank partners, ECAs, shipyards and shipowners, among others.

gmec – setting the green course

gmec (global maritime environmental congress) is now firmly established as the primary arena for leading experts and executives from the scientific community and the maritime industry, to identify issues and promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge. At the core of discussions and debates were the challenges of green technology and how to react in the face of inevitable change.

The round table discussion kicked off the proceedings with leading experts focussing on the sustainable shipping movement.

gmec this year provided a great opportunity to discuss some very relevant topics with the maritime industry. It was interesting to learn how the industry is preparing for the fast approaching 2015 ECA fuel requirements, and it was also insightful to better understand how the industry views the future of shipping.

setting the stage for the future

turning the spotlight on security and defence

The MS&D conference brought together specialists and strategists within the industry, the military and governments as they debated the future of maritime defence.

Hall B8 was once again dedicated to maritime security and defence. Exhibits featuring systems and equipment showcased the developments making waves in the global maritime industry, from surveillance and security applications to sensors, communication technology, command systems and information systems.

SMM is world’s premier maritime event and allows amazing networking. If you are a part of the global maritime industry, you have to be at SMM.

The MS&D conference is also a great opportunity for companies in the defence and security industry to directly meet future customers and provide thoughtful leadership. This is a developing part of the SMM exhibition and is a welcome addition.

The Hamburg Messe is a great location for MS&D. The organisation of the event is excellent and being asked to present a Plenary Paper on the future trends in the Maritime Security and Defence industry was a tremendous privilege.

setting the stage for the future

For us the Offshore Dialogue was a good opportunity to present a little bit of the Damen activities in the Offshore. At the same time, I think the discussion and questions were very useful and helped us to better understand what the market requirements are and to value what is necessary to align with this market. I was very pleased with the large number of attendees and the quality of the questions which indicated the importance of the subjects and the offshore dialogue. Overall, the SMM exhibition was quite good for Damen, we received a lot of positive responses on the Offshore Dialogue but also on our stand.

Sybrand Boschma
Business Development Manager Offshore, Damen Shipyards

a day filled with conversation and debate

The Offshore Dialogue was again supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics Affairs and Energy, along with numerous professional associations and institutions.

The Offshore Dialogue attracted 450 key players from international maritime industry, governmental organisations, science and academia. Conference topics revolved around the existing and future potential of offshore oil and gas production and emerging trends relating to offshore wind energy and maritime technologies.

let’s get to work

SMM added the recruiting day to its repertoire this year, in recognition of the rapid and dynamic change faced by the maritime industry. The Maritime Career Market provided companies and institutions with a platform to highlight the skills they are seeking and to promote their own further education and training programmes.

The event was well received, and visitors were given a great overview of the career opportunities that await them within the industry.

The Maritime Career Market has offered the ideal framework to initiate into conversation with the target group MAN Diesel & Turbo SE is interested in and to present our company as an attractive employer.
The rush for our recruiting booth was huge, and we experienced tremendous enthusiasm from the many promising talks with potential candidates. We will attend again next year with pleasure!
